Oaths are supposed to be rare; frivolous usage trivializes them.
Oaths based on lies (Mark 14:66-72). Some people try to hide the truth and get out of difficult situations.
Foolish oaths (Mark 6:17-29). People can take advantage of others or they may keep bad oaths based on pride (controlling and manipulative).
Immoral oaths (Acts 23:12). Oaths not approved by God can lead to wicked deeds (presumptuous).
Matthew 23:16-22. In that day, it was common to take a oath in front of others. If they didn't swear upon God's name the religious leaders would allow them to break them. People would get away with things using loopholes. This makes a mockery of something meant to bring truth.
God expects us to keep our oaths and vows, they're binding before the Lord (Ecclesiastics 5:4-6).
Exceptions: if you made an oath that goes against God's Word you must not keep it.
Should Christians make oaths? They were common in the Old Testament. In the New Testament Jesus responded under oath, Paul did, and angel did, and God has taken oaths.
Be cautious to make a promise but once you do, be sure to keep it.
